Spanish television fiction

History of programming and television fiction programs in Spain (generalist channel): From the deregulation to analogical blackout, 1990−2010

The research project studies the different formats of Spanish television fiction from the beginning of the 1990s until deregulation (content, programming and reception).

The research

Today's Spanish television fiction is the culmination of the enormous changes experienced since deregulation, the result of the irruption of private channels, the activity of regional channels, the boom in independent production and the professionalisation of the audiovisual sector. Towards the end of the nineties, the search for narrative formulas intensified, while the enormous social, economic, cultural and technological changes which Spain experienced at the turn of the century brought about a fundamental change in the modes of representation and consumption which would indelibly transform the forms of leisure and audiovisual consumption. This research project analyses Spanish television fiction and its context in order to understand the evolution and changes produced in the genre at a national level.

The project, financed by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, has the support of the Observatory of Spanish Fiction and New Technologies (OFENT) and the participation of researchers from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and other Spanish universities.

The project has organized the International Congress About New Narratives: Between Information and Fiction: from Deregulation to Transmedia Integration and other seminars.
