The project and its events

The research project has promoted and carried out different activities to disseminate results, such as the “International Congress on New Narratives” (UAB, 2017), the “International Seminar on New Narratives: Interpretation and Cognition” (UAB, 2018), the colloquium “New narrations, new mediatizations: twenty years of the deSignis magazine” (UAB-UPF, 2019) and the “International Seminar on Semiotics and current affairs” (online, 2020).

It has also co-organised the following events: V International Conference on Gender and Communication (University of Seville, 2020); IV International Conference on Gender and Communication (University of Seville, 2019); XII Jornadas Internacionales de Historia y Cine (UCM, 2018); V International Conference on Media Ethics (University of Seville, 2016); “IX Jornadas Internacionales de Historia y Cine. El desafío de un nuevo modelo de televisión en Europa” (UCM, 2016).

This section reviews the events organised by the project, as well as those in which it has participated.

International Seminar on 'Semiotics and current affairs'

On 2, 9 and 16 December 2020, the Spanish Association of Semiotics (AES) organised the International Seminar on Semiotics and current affairs in online format with the aim of tackling different issues from rigorous semiotic positions. The event, coordinated by Charo Lacalle, José Romera and Mario de la Torre, featured a top-level academic panel, divided into three round tables that dealt with aspects such as the pandemic, gender and current affairs in the discipline.

Thus, on 2 December the seminar Semiotics, Pandemic and Culture was held, coordinated by Miguel Ángel Martín and whose guests were José Romera, Darío Villanueva and Alfredo Cid. On the 9th the focus was on Gender Narratives with Raquel Nogal as the coordinator of the seminar, which was attended by Giulia Colaizzi, Charo Lacalle and Manuel Ángel Vázquez. Finally, the congress ended on the 16th with the coordination of Óscar Gómez in the seminar Current Semiotics, which was attended by Jorge Lozano, Francisco Linares and Lucrecia Escudero.

2019 International Colloquium

'New narratives, new mediatizations: Twenty years of deSignis magazine'

On 9 and 10 May 2019 took place the International Colloquium deSignis 2019, organised by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). The seminar focused on New Narratives and New Mediatizations, celebrating 20 years of deSignis magazine by great academic figures of communication in Latin America. The event was coordinated by Dr. Charo Lacalle (UAB) and Dr. Carlos Scolari (UPF).

During the first day of the event, held at the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the UAB, topics such as new formats, new mediatizations and even fashiongrammers were discussed. Also, that same night at the Ateneu Barcelonés took place the event entitled El Signo sirve para mentir, where the focus was on verisimilitude and fake news. To close the colloquium, the second day was spent at the Poblenou campus of the Pompeu Fabra University, where two round tables were formed, also dealing with themes such as media, platforms and relations.

As can be seen on the poster, all the events were chaired by professors from both institutions and special guests.

‘International Seminar on New Narratives: Interpretation and Cognition’

On 18 December 2018 the ‘International Seminar on New Narratives: Interpretation and Cognition’ was held in the Graus Hall of the UAB Faculty of Communication Sciences, where young researchers and doctoral students were invited to present their advances or research results in poster format.

The event was presented by Charo Lacalle (director of the seminar) and Roberto Pellerey (Università degli Studi di Genova) and throughout the day, semiotics, narrative and interpretation were discussed by invited specialists such as Federico Montanari (Università degli Studi di Modena-Reggio Emilia, Italy), José María Perceval (UAB), Carlos Scolari (UPF) and Carlos Isaac González (National Autonomous University of Mexico).

In addition, the limitations of semi-cognitive models were discussed and Nicola Dusi (Università degli Studi di Modena-Reggio Emilia) analysed the film ‘Gomorrah’. Alfredo Tenoch Cid Jurado (Autonomous Metropolitan University Xochimilco, Mexico) used the writings of Umberto Eco to make the audience reflect on television and cognition.

‘International Congress About New Narratives: Between Information and Fiction: from Deregulation to Transmedia Integration’

From 3 to 5 July, the Faculty of Communication Sciences at the Autonomous University of Barcelona hosted the International Congress About New Narratives: Between Information and Fiction: from Deregulation to Transmedia Integration, organised by the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences.

The congress was part of the project that gives its name to this website: ‘History of programming and television fiction programs in Spain (generalist channel): from the deregulation to analogical blackout, 1990−2010’ directed by Charo Lacalle Zalduendo and financed by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness within the framework of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2013-2016, as an R&D project of the State Programme for the Promotion of Scientific and Technical Research of Excellence.

The objective of this congress was to examine the evolution of the different television genres and formats, placing special emphasis on the mutual influence between the expressive resources of fiction and the information content that characterizes current television. The different sections of the meeting focused on the hybridization of the contents of current television: the changes in the genres and formats and the “transmedia” trends that are renewing linear television.

Throughout the meeting, topics such as the “traces of history” on Youtube, the representation of the genre in new narratives, media memory, series, information on television or television reports in different countries were discussed.
